Kelly led him down the hall to the workroom Mom used for her sewing and craft projects. She opened the closet door, stood on tiptoe, and reached for the tin box at the back of the second shelf. Holding it, she sat down it on the daybed. Alex sat down beside her. “This used to be a Christmas-cake tin,” she explained. The lid was decorated with a winter scene. A sleigh drawn by a running horse. The passengers were warmly dressed in coats and scarves.

Kelly pried off the lid. Alex peered around her shoulder . . .
