Pockets® is a 48-page devotional magazine for children published by The Upper Room®.
Pockets was launched in 1981 in response to parents and grandparents who had expressed their desire for a devotional magazine for children of elementary school age (6 to 12). The magazine is published 11 times per year (January/February is the combined issue).
Pockets was designed for the personal use of children to help them grow in their relationship with God. Focus groups of children helped to name the magazine. The idea behind the name Pockets is that children put wonderful things in their pockets, and that this magazine for children is full of wonderful things. When the Upper Room launched the magazine, circulation exceeded 50,000 by the second issue. Current circulation is about 90,000, including individual subscriptions and standing orders to churches who distribute the magazine to the children in their congregations.
Pockets includes full-color illustration, stories, poems, games, activities, daily scripture readings, recipes, and contributions from children. In 1995 the magazine expanded from 32 pages to 48 pages and added a four-page section for younger children (Wendell's Pages), letters from readers, and "My Journal," along with extra stories and games.
Pockets receives regular feedback from a children's advisory board. Members of the board serve for one year. They evaluate each issue and suggest themes for future issues.
Pockets also features three regular characters -- Pockets, Capp, and Wendell . Pockets got her name because she wears clothes that have lots of Pockets. Capp has 87 different hats and always wears one. Wendell is a rather unusual rabbit who wears big sneakers and can't think about much but carrots. These three characters introduce the issues of the magazine and appear in many of the regular features.
Pockets sponsors two contests annually -- a fiction-writing contest for adults and a cover art contest for children.
